Weekend Edition – Labor Day Reflections on Work

September 5, 2009

In honor of Labor Day Weekend, I thought I’d include a passage of scripture that relates to why we work and the fruit of our labor.

Ephesians 4:28 (ESV)

Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need.

ESV Study Bible Notes for reflection:

Paul uses the thief to illustrate how repentance impacts one’s lifestyle. Repentance involves both stopping (negative) and starting (positive). The thief must stop stealing and start doing honest work. Stealing arises out of laziness and greed, so the repentant thief must display the opposite: diligence at labor and willingness to share.

In a related post a while back called The Fruit of Faithful Finances, I mentioned that the reason why we work, make money, get our personal finances in order and strive to become debt free is not to better our own lives, but rather it is so we can share with those in need and be a help and benefit to other people.

Loving and serving others for Jesus sake is what brings ultimate and lasting joy!

As we pause from our labors this weekend, let’s use this break to refresh our mindset that work is something God has given us so we can bless others and glorify Him.
