Weekend Edition – Contentment
I read some interesting posts and comments on a couple financial blogs this week that mentioned contentment as a starting point to help get out of debt and avoid being a slave to your money. Not all of these comments were from a Christian worldview, but I thought it was interesting that this was brought up because the Bible has a lot to say about contentment and our love for money. One notable verse regarding contentment is Hebrews 13:5. I’ve included the ESV Study Bible notes for reflection:
Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
The antidote to love of money is contentment, which comes from trusting in God’s promised provision (see Deut. 31:6, 8; also Josh. 1:5). The citation from Ps. 118:6 applies the idea of trusting in God for more than just financial needs (esp. in light of persecution, Heb. 13:3).
God takes care of His children and that should free us up from worry and loving money because we don’t need to spend our time chasing after material things. Rather, contentment should free us to pursue more important things like our relationship with God, our friends, family and others so we can impact the kingdom of God.
