Weekend Edition – A Must Read for Workaholics

July 18, 2009

I came across these verses in my personal study recently and thought I would share so you may meditate on them.  These are taken from the ESV Study Bible.  I’m including the Study Bible notes as well for reflection:

Proverbs 23:4-5

Do not toil to acquire wealth;
be discerning enough to desist.
When your eyes light on it, it is gone,
for suddenly it sprouts wings,
flying like an eagle toward heaven.

The workaholic is exhorted to be discerning enough to desist in his pursuit of wealth. suddenly it sprouts wings. Wealth is fleeting; there should come a point where a person decides he has enough, and he will devote some of his time and effort to valuable activities that bring no financial reward.

It seems especially difficult in America to be discerning enought to desist from our work.  Let’s face it, corporations reward workaholics, but what is the price we pay for our earthly rewards?  Take this weekend to reflect on your work and remember to invest into family, friendships and other eternal rewards.

As a side note, I’d like to thank Will Chen from Wise Bread for including my post “9 Tips to Save on Gas Without Buying a Hybrid” at the Carnvial of Pecuniary Delights.   A Money Carnival basically gives readers a chance to see other good resources on personal finance and money issues.  Check it out.
